I do not disagree whatsoever from Courtney's claim (http://www.glocom.org/debates/20040601_courtney_comments/) that democracy is in many ways an ideal system (though he later goes on to say that US
democracy is not perfect).
All I say is that the social contract that produces this ideal democratic
state is a temporary phase in the development of societies. As it
disintegrates, societies have no choice but to turn to other instruments,
including fundamentalist religions and other ideologies, to hold
themselves together.
