Date: 18 Jan 2001
ATIP01.003 : NDBC 2000

ABSTRACT: NDBC 2000, the seventeenth National Database Conference (NDBC), was held in Baoding China, 9-10 Oct 2000. As a window into database R&D in China, this report summarizes the conference and also provides insights on database developments in China.

Date: 24 Jan 2001
ATIP01.004 : IWALT Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies

ABSTRACT: This report describes the first IEEE workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies held in New Zealand in December 2000 (IWALT). It reports on the most significant papers presented and attempts to distill the conclusions drawn from the papers, panel sessions, and other discussion. IWALT was the first event sponsored by the IEEE in this area through its Learning Technology Task Force. This report should be of value to anyone who is interested in applying such technologies to teaching and learning.

Date: 1 Feb 2001
ATIP01.005 : Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference 2000

ABSTRACT: This report summarizes technical presentations at the Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference (APMC 2000) held in Sydney, Australia, from December 3-6, 2000. The four-day conference highlighted microwave theory and technologies from the points-of-view of government, university and industry research in countries of the Asia-Pacific region, notably Japan, Australia and US/Canada. Broadly, the Conference hoped to address the following questions: What can we expect in the way of new developments and applications? What advances do we need to make to improve the products and services our industries provide? What is the current state of research in the area, and what do we see as the challenges for the future?

ATIP01.006 : Bumrungrad’s Hospital Information System

ABSTRACT: The world’s hospitals use a variety of information systems. Frequently, a heterogeneous computing environment creates integration problems, as well as a difficult and confusing situation for users who frequently must contend with different interfaces. Systems tend to be expensive, and there are also high costs for support and staffing. This report discusses a solution to the “hospital I.S. problem” in the form of a new type of fully integrated Hospital Information System, now being developed at Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok, in partnership with a European-based start-up, that uses widely available hardware and software components.
