REPORT CONTENTS
1. INTRODUCTION
This report contains short abstracts, a few sentences, for each of the ATIP year 2001 Reports. A typical ATIP Report is in two parts, one public portion, and one subscriber portion, although this report is totally public. In 2001, ATIP produced 58 reports (including this one) on technology developments in and around Asia. The following is the titles of the 51st through 58th reports (see the rest at the URL above or in this series on the GLOCOM Platform).
- ATIP01.051 : Snapshots of Asian Nanotech Companies
- ATIP01.052 : Bioinformatics in India
- ATIP01.053 : GRAPE & MDM Computers
- ATIP01.054 : Nanobiology Activities in Europe
- ATIP01.055 : Microfluidics in Europe
- ATIP01.056 : Spintronics R&D in Japan
- ATIP01.057 : Molecular Electronics 2001 (ECME 2001)

2. ABSTRACTS OF YEAR 2001 ATIP TECHNOLOGY REPORTS
2001 ATIP Technology Reports are numbered sequentially, atip01.001, atip01.002, etc.
Date: 1 Nov 2001
ATIP01.051 : Snapshots of Asian Nanotech Companies
ABSTRACT: This report gives a summary of the companies that exhibited at the Tsukuba Symposium on Carbon Nanotubes, in Commemoration of the 10 th Anniversary of Its Discovery, held on Oct. 3-5 2001. We also include other companies from China that are active in Carbon Nanobube manufacturing. We outline the current private investment update in Japan in Nanotechnology.

ATIP01.052 : Bioinformatics in India
ABSTRACT: The Indian government launched a bioinformatics program nearly 15 years ago. Recent government and industry initiatives are leading to a spurt in bioinformatics activities. This report describes current research in universities and public-funded labs, profiles some industry players, and discusses challenges that India faces in its attempts to emerge a leading player in bioinformatics.

ATIP01.054 : Nanobiology Activities in Europe
ABSTRACT: This report summarizes European activities in nanobiotechnology. The geographical areas addressed include the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Switzerland. The research and development policy regarding nanobiotechnology are presented for the European Union as a whole and for each country individually. Descriptions of European Centers of Excellence and enabling technologies are presented in the second part of the report. The third part of the report addresses companies, which are pursuing industrial developments in nanobiotechnology. Contacts and web links of interest are listed at the end of the report.

ATIP01.055 : Microfluidics in Europe
ABSTRACT: This report summarizes European activities in Microfluidics -- technologies for applications requiring an accurate measurement and metering of very small quantities of fluids. There are a broad range of important applications, such as industrial marking, biotechnology, drug discovery & medical diagnostics, pharmacogenomics, polymer synthesis, combinatorial drug synthesis, chemical processing and analysis. In this report, the geographical area addressed include the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Switzerland. A background of technologies and systems is presented, and descriptions of European industrial, academic, government organizations, developing and marketing of products and services are presented. Over three-dozen pictures, figures, and tables display the technologies in detail. Conclusions outline findings of the report including dominant technological and market activities in Europe.

ATIP01.056 : Spintronics R&D in Japan
ABSTRACT: This technical report summarizes a one-day Japanese language workshop, "Current Status and Future Prospects of Spin Electronics" that was held October 23, 2001 in Tokyo. Spin Electronics refers to electronic devices whose properties are determined by electron spin, rather than only by charge. Importantly, this workshop was held (for the first time) under the joint auspices of three major Japanese scientific societies, the Magnetics Society of Japan, the Japan Society of Applied Physics and the Japan Society of Physics.

ATIP01.057 : Molecular Electronics 2001 (ECME 2001)
ABSTRACT: ECME 2001, the European conference of molecular electronics 2001, was held in the Netherlands 12-16 September 2001. It was the sixth in a series that started in 1992. This report summarizes the conference and the current state of "moletronics" in Europe.
