Summary of Main Presentations:

Howard Rheingold (GLOCOM Fellow):
"Smart Mobs"
A summary of his presentation is available at: http://www.glocom.org/debates/20030828_rheingold_smart/

"Smart Mobs: Mobile Communications, Pervasive Computing, Collective Action"
Presented at GLOCOM's Kenkyu-Kyohryoku-Iinkai Meeting on August 28.

"Smart mobs emerge when communication media and social contracts amplify cooperation. Smart mobs have both beneficial and destructive impacts: like all other powerful media. Smart mobs are about where the PC was in 1980 and the Internet was in 1990."

Anthony Townsend (Research Scientist, Taub Urban Research Center, New York University):
"NYCwireless and Wi-Fi in the Big Apple"

His presentation covered the following topics: the mission and history of NYCwireless, his own non-profit organization, and various projects and networks such as the Washington Square Park project, the Tompkins Square Park project, the Bryant Park Wireless Network, the Lower Manhattan Wireless Network and the Union Square Wireless Network. Future directions include global umbrella organization and mesh network communities.
