Dr. John deBoer (Japan Studies Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Institute for International Studies) talks about Japan's role in Middle East in the interview conducted at his office on May 21, 2004.
He emphasizes the importance of Japan's soft power which has been recognized by many people in the region, and hopes that it can offset the negative image of Japan's hard-power involvement in Iraq. In particular, he mentions Japan's cultural contributions such as popular TV programs, which have been well received in the Middle East region.
